Lake Como tour based on the ferry stops

Probably the most pleasurable way to see Lake Como is from the water; it certainly provides the best views. Navigazione Laghi makes the most of this beautiful natural resource by scheduling ferry stops at all the key commercial and tourism locations on the lake. The ferries are pleasant, efficient, regular and reasonably-priced as well. In fact, you could plan your whole sightseeing itinerary based upon the ferry stops alone! Let’s go through some of the main stops and their highlights:

  • Como – the Cathedral, Sant’Abbondio and San Fedele Churches, the Broletto Palace, the Voltiano Temple, the Funicular to Brunate
  • Cernobbio – an aristocratic and glamorous resort where the Villa d’Este hotel is located. It’s a delightful town at the foot of Mount Bisbino (1,325m)
  • Torno – Porticciolo, Santa Tecla and San Giovanni Churches
  • Isola Comacina – the lake’s only island, visit the San Eufemia Basilica (no ferry in Winter time)
  • Lenno – Villa del Balbianello, nowadays the villa is a museum owned by the FAI (Italian Environment Foundation) and the gardens are open to the public
  • Tremezzo – Villa Carlotta with its botanical gardens
  • Bellagio – Bustling village with cobbled alleyways and steps, the Villa Melzi, the Villa Serbelloni and its lovely gardens (check the opening times before you go)
  • Menaggio – charming little town with examples of the Belle Époque
  • Varenna – a beautiful hamlet; visit the Villa Cipressi and the Villa Monastero, and also the Vezio Castle

  • Bellano – Bellano’s “Orrido” gorge was formed by erosion from the river Pioverna (over a period of 15 million years) which flows into the lake
  • Gravedona – the Santa Maria of Tiglio Church and the Gallio Palace
  • Piona – see the Abbey founded by Cluniacensi monks (ferry doesn’t stop here in the Winter)
  • Colica – a town situated on the road to Stelvio (Valtellina) and Maloja (Valchiavenna), the Pian di Spagna natural reserve, Mezzola Lake
  • Lecco – Manzonian places (not during the Winter).
